From the Roaring 20s to the 1980s, each decade had its own signature style and icons unique to them. Music, film, art, and fashion varied greatly from decade to decade and each one-of-a-kind generation, along with its styles and trends, can still boast devoted, die-hard fans that appreciate the uniqueness of the age. Each group of vintage fans celebrate their love of the many vintage trends in different ways: some watch movies from their beloved decade, some wear the fashions, some learn the dances - others do it all, and they can do it all again at Vintage Festival 2011.

With the success of Vintage Festival 2010 still fresh in the minds of attendees, Vintage Festival 2011 promises to be an even bigger, better, and more rewarding experience than the one before it. Coordinated by Wayne and Geraldine Hemingway, the aim of the festival is to bring the joys of each decade between 1920 and 1980 straight into the 2010s. For three consecutive days, July 29th through the 31st, all of the old, familiar styles that fans have come to know and love from decades long past are coming back with a vengeance and taking over London's famous Southbank Centre.

With so many decades to cover, only the Southbank Centre will do. Every nook and cranny of the venue will be completely overhauled for the festival, its six levels turned into a vintage fan's dream for one fabulous, glamorous weekend sure to bring more thrills and excitement to attendees. For over 13 hours per day of the festival, attendees will have many different activities to choose from: shopping from top-notch vintage retailers, dining on fine food, learning the dances from their favourite decade, and enjoying live entertainment. Whether attendees want to enjoy a low-key day of shopping and relaxing or jumpin' and jivin' to their favourite swing tunes, there is guaranteed to be something for everyone to enjoy.

For each day of the festival, attendees have the option of attending vintage musical revues. Each day, Vintage Festival 2011 will host a concert in the RFH auditorium focusing on a specific period in music, with Saturday's Soul Revue as one of its main attractions. Great names like Booker T, Jimmy James, Gwen Dickie, and Hamish Stewart are already slated to appear, with more performers yet to be announced. Retro rock and roll fans can look forward to LET IT ROCK, an exploration of the wild and free rock and rockabilly tunes from the 1950s onward, taking attendees back in time to an era of pin-up girls and Blue Suede Shoes.

The 1960s was an era chock full of classic trends, and loyal 60s fans attending Vintage Festival 2011 can look forward to seeing and experiencing all their favourite fashions. Reputable vintage retailers will set up shop in the Southbank Centre all weekend long, ready to help their customers dress to impress. Fans of any decade will have the option of receiving full makeovers referencing the decade of their choosing whether they prefer bell-bottoms or hoop skirts, allowing them to strut their stuff through the festival, wearing their true colours and getting a first-hand experience of the styles and trends they have grown to love.

Vintage Festival 2011 promises to deliver everything that vintage fans expect. With plenty of options for music, dining, shopping, and dancing, this July weekend is bound to provide vintage enthusiasts with good times and memorable experiences.

Mini, midi and maxi dominated the look of 1960s clothing as skirts hems moved up and down the leg.  Mary Quant, Jean Shrimpton, Twiggy, long skinny legs and short, short skirts barely bigger than belts were the hallmark of the swinging sixties.  The fashion also had its stamp on the car as the Italian Job starred Michael Caine ‘blowing the bloody doors off’ in a supporting role to the famous car zipping round the streets of Turin.

Collectors go to great lengths to find mini skirts.  For sixties clothing collectors go to great lengths to dig out the shortest mini skirts – when looking for sixties female fashion collectibles think Carnaby Street and the Liver Birds, the popular TV series starring Nerys Hughes.

Midi skirts were the next wave of 1960s teenager who was maturing away from the all-too-revealing length of the mini skirt. Midi skirts were a sleek fit down below the knee that teasingly showed some leg but left a lot more to the imagination than the mini.  Cotton was the most popular fabric with many fashion conscious teens turning to buying patterns and material to run up their own skirts. Midis were also made from polyester “double-knit” fabrics, first popular at this time, and Indian fabrics that were creeping in to Beatles’ inspired fashion.

Shabby chic with gypsy style maxi skirts.  The Faye Dunaway midi look from the 1967 Bonnie and Clyde movie with Warren Beatty was also a heavy influence for the style as the film was a huge worldwide box-office success.  Next comes the maxi at the closing of the decade. The response to the mini and midi was to go ankle length and hippy style with shabby chic. Gypsy style cotton skirts with colourful prints or tie-dye patterns and frilly cotton blouses were all the rage.  Collectors of 1960s clothing should watch out for Biba cardy coats – extra long button-up woollen cardigans worn over maxi outfits.

For those that are old enough, Biba brings back memories of patchouli, the roof garden restaurant in Kensington and fashionable 1960s clothes and accessories at affordable prices.

Biba was founded as a womenswear brand in 1964 by Barbara Hulanicki and was one of the styles of the 1960s and early 1970s.

Biba’s style was a mish-mash of patterns, lush purples and more earthy colours - but soaring over that was the famous Biba gold and black art deco logo of lovers dancing.

For those that miss the fun, freedom excitement of those heady days, Biba is back - expect to see Biba fashion and products hitting the shelves in House of Fraser stores up and down the UK for autumn 2010.

New Biba designs to hit the stores

Designers are at work on new Biba accessories, jewellery, footwear, homeware and fragrances.

Stephanie Chen, House of Fraser executive director for womenswear and accessories, said the designs are inspired from Biba’s archives.

She said: "We will be making it a lot more appropriate for today and picking up an essence of Biba with flamboyant, sexy prints in silks, knits and dark denims with soft washes."

A ‘Biba Blue’ range will be priced from £50 for denim and ‘Biba Gold’ limited edition range will start at £200.

The original Biba philosophy was clothes for bright, young things and often women over 30 complained they felt out of place and unwelcome in the Biba store that ‘lived’ in the former Derry and Toms department store building.

Biba fills a need for shopping nostalgia

For those in the know, a trip to Biba was combined with a visit to nearby Kensington Market, where many stalls sold samples from top designers at rock bottom prices.

House of Fraser want to pitch the brand at the over 30’s who are now the shoppers with nostalgia for the brand.

Landlords British Land Company closed Biba in 1975, when they figured the property was worth than the rent Biba paid. By that time, Hulanicki had left to open her owned short-lived store in Conduit Street, Mayfair.

Many of the styles often associated with the 1960s originated as part of the Mod subculture.

In the early 1960s, a small group of young people in London and the South of England became known for their distinctive style and attitude to life. This group became known as the Mods, and began gathering in crowds at seaside resorts on the South of England at weekends.

Clashes with another subculture called the Rockers brought widespread attention from the press, as did the Mods’ obsession with style. The 1966 Kinks song “Dedicated Follower of Fashion” poked fun at the Mod’s keen interest in fashion; the Mods spent a proportionally large amount of their salary on clothes, something which often brought scorn from the older generation.

Although the Mods had a reputation for fighting, many people who were part of the Mod movement in the 1960s say that newspaper reports were exaggerated; the majority of Mods would have been too worried about ruining their expensive suit to get involved in fights.

The Mods based their style on looks favoured by French and Italian men. Sharp suits were key to the Mod style, often made to measure by Italian designers. Other clothing popular with the Mods included button-down shirts, cashmere jumpers and narrow ties. Although the Mods favoured smart styles and tailored looks, they also seized the opportunity to express the Mod ethos through their clothes. They took iconic symbols like the Union Jack flag and made them their own, incorporating them on badges and bags.

Footwear was another important element of the Mod look; narrow-toed shoes called winkle-pickers were popular, as were brogues and brightly coloured bowling shoes. Clarks’ Desert Boots were another key part of the Mod look, and are still available to buy today.

In contrast to more feminine styles of the 1950s, Mod fashion for women in the 1960s favoured a more gamine look. Short hair styles were popular, as were trousers and flat shoes. The mini skirt was also an important part of the mod look for young women, and was another cause of concern for the older generation. British pop star Twiggy epitomised the female Mod look, with her short skirts, heavily kholed eyes and short bobbed hair.

Several of the fashion brands made famous by the Mods are still as popular today. The Mod spirit lives on in collections from designers such as Fred Perry, Ben Sherman and Mary Quant, all alive and kicking in London’s Carnaby Street as they were in the 1960s.

The first site that greeted me as I entered the Goodwood Revival last Saturday was a street scene depicting swinging London in the 1960s with girls in mini skirts dancing on podiums and girls and boys dancing in front of a replica of Track Records next to an old London double-decker bus. The scene created a buzz as people lined up to both take pictures and be photographed with the dancers.

This set the flavour of what was to come as the mini was present throughout the site both in the form of skirts and dresses, and of course cars. Mr Bean recreated a scene from one of his TV episodes in which he drove a mini while sitting in an armchair which was strapped to the roof. Later he returned to his normal guise as Rowan Atkinson to take part in one of the many races of the day.

Policemen in 1960s uniform patrolled the area and displayed their various vintage vehicles, and the crowds were entertained by air displays by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and the Vulcan bomber as well as a quartet of Spitfires and Mustangs. For anyone who wanted a bird's eye view events there were pleasure flights in various de Havilland aircraft.
