Vintage Clothing

This part of the site is where we list the growing number of vintage inspired jewellery, clothing, shoes, and accessories from a variety of suppliers who have taken inspiration from the designs of yesteryear to create retro style fashion items of today.

For example, there's some lovely tops and dresses in retro inspired patterns and prints. Then there are Rockabilly dresses, skirts, petticoats, pumps, and heels, and there's a line of goth and vampish womenswear. Also, there are some men's polos, and women's tops as well as skinny jeans.

Then there's some jewellery that would easily compliment an outfit inspired by the 1950s or 1960s by virtue of its flowers, insects, and peace symbols.

'The Improved Street Railway Carriage' 1861.

'The Improved Street Railway Carriage' 1861.
£150.00

Lithograph printed by Maclure, Macdonald and McGregor, showing a pair of the Street Railway Carriages patented by George Francis Train pasing the Marble Arch in London. Train, an American author and entrepreneur, introduced the first trams in Birkenhead in 1860 and London in 1861. The lines in London were laid in Bayswater, Victoria and Kennington, with the cars pulled by horses. Train's innovative mode of transport was not popular, partly because the design of rails used stood proud above the road surface if incorrectly laid, creating an obstacle to other types of road vehicle. The London lines were removed after only a few months. Trams did make a comeback, however, after the pasing of an Act of Parliament in 1870 permitting the laying of tramways in London.

Overhead Railway and Dock Road 2

Overhead Railway and Dock Road 2
£25.00

Photograph of a very busy street scene with a variety of different types of transport on Dock Road, Liverpool. In the background the tops of masts are visible showing the picture was taken very close to the river Mersey with buildings of Prince's Dock East in front. The overhead railway is clear in this image with advertising for Walker's brewery on the side it says Walker's Warrington & Falstaff Ales and Walker's Highland Whisky. The traffic moving away from the camera next to the railway is varied. There are a few cars but mainly horse-drawn carts which are transporting goods to the dock area. One of these carts says "Hovis" on the back of it. In the distance there is a very old style van/lorry with "Armstrong, Litherland & Crosby, Liverpool" written on the side. The traffic is three vans and one horse drawn cart with barrels on. Along the road a number of cars and carts are parked. Tram tracks run along this area in a number of directions and the wires needed to power them cut across most of the image due to the angle the photograph was taken at.

A sticker-up of bills on Tower Hill at the rendezvous at the King's Arms

A sticker-up of bills on Tower Hill at the rendezvous at the King's Arms
£179.99

The King's Arms on Tower Hill, London, was the City naval rendezvous, most significantly that for the local impress service, which included both voluntary recruitment and the 'press gang' when emergency required this. Recruits of both sorts were housed on the 'Enterprise', the name of a series of receiving ships moored off the Tower, before being shipped down to Sheerness and beyond by naval tenders. Whether this bill-sticker was specifically naval (for recruiting posters) is not clear, since there were many other sorts, but this anonymous portrait is an extraordinary record of a worker at one of the lowest levels of London life. He appears to be wearing a dilapidated fair wig on top of naturally dark hair. Since there are several October 1774 drawings in the Bray album which may be London subjects, it is possible Bray was at the King's Arms waiting for (free) passage by sea round to Portsmouth on one of the naval tenders, rather than taking the public coach. It is probable from other evidence that he was in fact in London by about the end of September.
